A half-human half-witch girl has to choose between both worlds on the night of her sixteenth birthday. When she refuses to do so, she will have to deal with the consequences her decision will bring upon her, while managing the dangers that threaten the magical world of her family and the human world of her friends. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a Netflix original show based on the Archie comic book series of the same name, with other Archie Comics adaptations including Riverdale and Katy Keene.
A double identity
Each episode follows Sabrina trying to solve a problem caused by her desire to reconcile both of her identities, with a larger and more sinister narrative developing in the background. The supernatural elements with a high school setting make the show comparable to others such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Teen Wolf.
The series is light-hearted and self-aware, but also contains elements of horror. With detailed set design and a distinctive visual style, reminiscent of 90’s horror media such as Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina manages to tackle modern topics such as religion, feminism, and sexuality, all under an immersive supernatural veil.
